What is dermatology?
Dermatology is a medical specialty focused on the diagnosis and treatment of skin, hair and nail conditions.
Skin diseases are common - there are about 200 common and frequently seen conditions and over 2,000 rare skin disorders.
Skin conditions can range from benign (non-cancerous) to malignant (cancerous) lesions, they can affect anyone, from babies to the oldest in society and things are often routine but occasionally become emergencies.
Some conditions can be associated with difficult symptoms but many also have a prominent psychological and social impact. Dr. Thomas is
happy to recommend any support his patients
may require, above and beyond the immediate
dermatological need.

How we make a diagnosis
As Dermatologists, we are trained across the whole spectrum of skin disease, from the common to the rare.
Diagnoses will sometimes be clear to the Dermatologist on first sight, but in some circumstances may require blood tests or a skin biopsy to determine the answer. A Dermatologist needs to be able to make the diagnosis, in order to explain the condition and treatment options in a clear supportive manner.
How do I find the best Dermatologist?
Sometimes finding the right specialist can be difficult. A clinician’s current or previous NHS hospital affiliation can provide a guide as to their expertise. Seeking advice from trusted sources such as your family doctor, other specialists and friends & family can also help locate the right doctor for you. Certified Doctors and a Dermatologists will be listed on the specialist register with the General Medical Council
